Moissanite is a beautiful man made stone, and more expensive
than CZ.
When viewed under natural daylight it exhibits about twice the fire and
scintillation of a natural diamond. The brilliant flashes and
play of
kaleidoscopic colors are truly impressive. Because of its
superior
light performance, some women prefer Moissanite to diamond when
they
are compared side by side. Unfortunately, the disadvantage is
that
Moissanite is a laboratory grown crystal and even if it is more
fascinating to look at, it does not carry the romantic associations
that are inherent in a natural diamond .
If you know a few details to look for, it is not difficult to spot a
Moissanite from a diamond. First, even though the scintillation
and
fire is greater than diamond, the body color of a Moissanite is
noticeably darker than a diamond. In low light conditions you
will see
a slight grey-green and yellow cast that is not present in natural
diamonds.
Also, Moissanite has a natural grain in the body of the stone called
rutilation, that is not present in diamonds. You can't see the grain
when you look into the center of the stone, so it does not detract from
its beauty. If you look closely through the crown angle facets
you
should be able to identify tiny perpendicular pipes running from the
top toward the bottom of the stone.
Two final tips about Moissanite: First, the round cuts have a
cleaner
and lighter body color that is more approximate to that of a diamond
while the fancy shapes such a Princess, Marquise and Pear are darker in
body color. Second, improved laboratory conditions have very
recently
yielded pure white Moissanite, which should be available to the public
later this year, and these gems will be very difficult to tell from
high quality diamonds.
